Implementing guidelines through education; multimedia a must
Lakhanpaul M, Blackwell N, Manikan, L
5th Annual G-I-N Conference 2008 in Helsinki, Finland. 02 October 2008.

This presentation looks at how multimedia can be used to improve guideline implementation and understanding, both through direct usage and through associated secondary learning. The necessity for such an approach is clear, with healthcare professionals facing reducing hours for teaching and learning and, amongst others, the introduction of competencies. An analysis of the NCEP CHD guidelines shows that only 18% of patients were treated to goal, even though 65% of clinicians reported that they had followed the guidelines. This study shows that provider awareness of the guidelines alone does not translate into successful treatment implementation.

The task therefore is to look at what systems need to be deployed to bridge the gap between Guidelines and Clinical Practice. Changing implementation behaviour is a process, not an event, and as such should be approached accordingly. The use of high quality, engaging multimedia embedded blended with general e-learning principles is an essential part of such an approach.
